Description

Over the course of six weeks I created an animated story frame by frame, based on the word “strange”. It is about a character navigating through various aspects of young life.

  • The 403 panels used to create the project were drawn by hand and later edited with Photoshop CC, iMovie and Premiere Pro CC
  • All 146 sounds used were either recorded and/or mixed in FL Studio
  • Special thanks to Thomas Rüegg and Daniel Niederöst for spending many hours on the sound design with me
  • I composed all music, except for the club scene track. It was then played through FL Studio

Making of

Storyboard

Most of the visual planning is documented on these three pages:

  • My main goal was to save as much time as possible wherever I could while drawing, so I marked purple all the elements of the picture I wanted to reuse and not animate frame by frame. Those elements were then drawn once and later pasted into all the other frames using Photoshop CC.
  • The red dots above K, L and M show where I would insert the frames from J because it`s a reoccurring sequence.
  • While working on scene C2 I came up with an additional sequence which I no longer included in the storyboard but marked with “Insert”.

Sound design

The sounds were recorded using a Zoom H2 handy recorder, mixed with FL Studio, and finally inserted into Premiere Pro CC

Workstation

Using an overturned table with a tilting mechanism, plexiglass and double-sided tape, I built a makeshift light table.

On the upper edge I drilled two holes and glued in one pole on each side. This enabled me to fixate my worksheets on the table.
